Before vampires that sparkle and cry, before interviews with the undead were cool, I have always liked the stories about vampires. The curiousity of how some centuries old creature would suck the lives out of human still be so intriguing, mysterious and of course sensual to women. Of course I am speaking of the early modern Dracula and not Noseferatu (that's a bit of a different story). But now on days, you have vampire movies with different backgrounds and McGuffins that are constantly being crapped out I think vampires are no longer something to be fearful but more like mesquitoes, annoying. Sad really.
Which brings me to Dracula 2000. Ugh. I remember loving this movie. No matter how many times I watched it our how much it sucked (no pun intended) I was sold. Why? Two words: Gerard Butler.

I would let him possess me to be his queen of the damned any day. But back to my point. Yes, that is the guy that played Leonidas in 300. But before the six pack abs and singing opera, he played Dracula in Wes Craven's Dracula 2000. Looking back and looking past the blue eyes I realized this movie sucked. The story was choppy and went into so many different directions you could have rabid kittens and it would have fit.
You start off with Van Helsing, who turns out to be over a century old living off Dracula's blood to find a way to kill Dracula. Ookkkkay. Van Helsing owns a antique collection in London were he employs a young man Simon (Johnny Lee Miller) and a young woman who Simon is attracted to (Jennifer Esposito). The movie hints that they dated once but she turned him down. Enter plot. End Plot. No point. She ends up being a thief working with a gang of theives trying to steal Van Helsing's treasure. They end up finding his "treasure" which is Dracula's coffin. They end up stealing the coffin heading to New Orleans to only find themselves meals for Dracula. The movie introduces our heroine, who turns out to be Van Helsings daughter!!! And since she is his daughter she has Dracula's blood running through her (Vann'ys living off Dracky's blood 'member) so in turn Drac wants her for his own. Van Helsing follow Dracula to New Orleans to look for him and mend this issue and to protect his daughter. He trusty assistant Simon is there following him to learn the truth about his boss and vampires. Honestly he takes it rather well and agrees to help. He doesn't put up a fight that the old fart is off his rocker and forgot his meds. He agrees to help Van Helsing (and does a horrible job at it). Vanny ends up dead by Dracula. Mary is turned into a vampire by Dracula to find out his true identity...... heh...... he is Judas. Yes, the Judas that betrays Jesus during the last super and was paid silver for it who later on hangs himself. Um.....enter rabid kittens here.
Turns out Dracula aka JUDAS wasn't allowed to die when he hung himself so in turn he become a vamp. A Vamp who could not be killed. He ends up being hanged and lit a flame by the sun. But it is implied he MAY not be dead. Daughter (Mary) Van Helsing and him have a show down. Simon our "hero" fights the hot thief now turned vampire and cuts off her head. Mary is still vampirish , her and Simon continue to work on her father's findings on how to kill Dracula.
Um, did they try cutting off his head, dismembering him, maybe emo self-centered girls are his weakness?? I mean I know Van Helsing said the undead can only be killed by a wooden stake, silver or their head being cut off. But he only said Dracula can not die because he was subect 0. The first. DID HE REALLY TRY?! The only glipse we see in the movie is Van Helsing in like the 1900's impelling Dracula with stakes but no other detail about the research he did was given.
This movie had too many side plots that never went anywhere. I think the writers were stoned or thought they could go some were but realized that shit sounded crazy. The characters did not sell the movie to me. It felt like I was watching Fantastic 4 (the one with Jessica Alba) nothing but dull.
Even though I criticize this flick I love it. It still beats out that whimpy, whinny, self-centered pansie movie saga... you know which one. Plus it has Gerard Butler. Enough said on my part.
